Amongst medicinal plants, fenugreek is one of the oldest. This medicinal herb originates from the Middle East and tends to grow on croplands. Its binomial name is Trigonella foenum fraecum. Fenugreek belongs to the Fabaceae family.
Fenugreek contains diosgenin, a compound that has similar properties to oestrogens, as well as steroidal saponins. Fenugreek by Now Foods contains compounds such as diosgenin and isoflavins with similar properties to the oestrogens that help to reduce symptoms such as menstrual discomfort and pain linked to premenstrual syndrome.
These compounds also alleviate symptoms of the menopause such as hot flushes and mood swings. Fenugreek has always been known for its ability to increase sexual desire in both men and women, and it is therefore recommended for men with impotence. Fenugreek is also attributed with laxative and emollient properties.
And by virtue of its effect in increasing appetite, it is also recommended for those of low body weight or suffering from anaemia (also for convalescent patients). According to studies, fenugreek also helps to reduce cholesterol, in particular the low density lipoprotein (LDL) and helps reduce blood sugar.
Galactomannan, a natural soluble fibre present in fenugreek slows down the absorption rate of sugar in the blood. Fenugreek seeds also contain mucilage, a lubricant agent that can calm irritated mucus membranes and reduce inflammation, and therefore this herb is also potentially useful for the treatment of respiratory diseases, including coughs and bronchitis.
