Alpha-lipoic acid is the universal antioxidant.
The structure of Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) provides you with unique properties:
- It can act in lipo and hydro soluble environments, protecting your body against oxidative stress.
- Increases the action and conservation of other antioxidants such as Vitamin C and vitamin E.
- It joins with free ions to form chelates.
Due to all of this, alpha lipoic acid is one of the most effective antioxidants for combatting free radicals, which is why it is known as the universal antioxidant. The job of antioxidants is to neutralise free radicals, a type of unstable molecule that are produced in our bodies every day. The way it acts consists of attaching to said unstable molecules to pair with their electrons, which prevents them from reacting with other vital molecules in the body and, consequently, preventing diseases they can cause (tumours, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and degenerative diseases).
Beneficial effects of alpha lipoic acid on different diseases:
In diabetes its effectiveness has been proven in the regulation of blood sugar levels, as it normalises them by facilitating their entry into the cells to be used. It also increases the capacity of insulin to use glucose and reduces insulin resistance in diabetics. Free radicals (which alpha lipoic acid neutralizes) helps to increase the activity of some cellular proteins designated nuclear factor kB (NF-kB) which are linked to the appearance of certain types of cancer.
Alpha lipoic acid inhibits these proteins, which prevents the development of malign cells. It is also beneficial for neurological diseases (amongst others, Alzheimers, Parkinsons
) and for cardiovascular diseases as it prevents the LDL from oxidising, and increases the effectiveness of vitamin E, increasing oxygenation of the heart. In addition, this product has been enriched with grape seed extract which also has interesting antioxidant properties and Bioperine® to improve absorption.
