Creatine is a natural substance that can be found in meat and fish, but can also be produced by the liver, pancreas and kidney through the arginine, glycine and methionine amino-acids.
Creatine is mainly found in skeletal muscle (approximately 98%) as free creatine attached to a molecule of phosphate (PCr or phosphocreatine). The PCr can work as an immediate source of energy for muscle contraction, which is essential for anaerobic, intensive and short-term exercises.
Another important function of creatine is its ability to stop or reject hydrogen ions, responsible for lowering the muscle pH and its conversion into more acidic, a factor that contributes to muscle fatigue.
Since creatine works synergistically with insulin to increase energy levels in the body, it is recommended to combine creatine supplements with carbohydrates (sugar or glucose), which increases the muscle creatine uptake, getting even higher levels of glycogen and energy.
